Dorset PCC, Martyn Underhill has today welcomed the Home Secretary’s announcement of a statutory inquiry chaired by Lord Justice Pitchford into the practices of undercover officers in the Special Demonstration Squad and the National Public Order Intelligence Unit.

Mr Underhill has previously written to the Rt Hon Mike Penning MP, Minister of State for Policing, Criminal Justice and Victims, about the issue and met with him last November to discuss his concern in relation to the squads.

Mr Underhill, himself an ex detective, said “The Minister re-assured me that the SDS practices no longer operate, however I have long held the view that lessons should be learnt and that the truth should come out, so that victims have closure. Some of the practices outlined in certain publications defy belief. I strongly believe that British policing must face increased scrutiny in this area and I hope the inquiry will progress things in this regard.”
