PCC Statement: Message following Bournemouth protests

I want to express my thanks and gratitude to the Dorset Police officers, staff and volunteers who safely and successfully policed the planned protests in Bournemouth on Sunday.

Alongside officers from nine other forces, Dorset Police showed utmost professionalism to ensure no reports of disorder took place, despite the challenging circumstances.

I know the impact standing up this response has had on our officers and staff at all levels, and I am very grateful to all those involved for their continued dedication and resilience.

While I know the pressure these events have placed on resources in our county, I am proud that Dorset Police alongside our partners have been able to facilitate safe and legal protests. Alongside these successful operations, I am pleased the joint working between criminal justice partners has been able to robustly use the powers at their disposal to bring those responsible for criminal behaviour to justice.

I know the past few weeks will have left members of our communities worried and concerned, and I want to send a clear message; Dorset does not and will not tolerate criminality in any form, whether that is hate crime, violence or disorder.

My final word of thanks goes to Dorset’s communities, who along with MPs, councillors and community leaders across our county, have shown support and gratitude for the work carried out by the Force during this time. I know they join me in expressing my appreciation for the excellent work officers, staff and volunteers have put in to keep us safe.

David Sidwick
Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner
