Halloween and Bonfire Night - a time for fun not Anti-Social Behaviour
While Halloween is a time when many families and youngsters in Dorset come together to have fun, I would urge everyone to do so responsibly tonight without inflicting potential harm on others.
My message to those planning to go out is to respect those in your neighbourhood who obviously don’t want visitors, be mindful of the vulnerable members of our community who may be adversely affected, and ensure you and your loved ones are safe when out and about by following the measures suggested by Dorset Police.
After Halloween of course comes Bonfire Night and I know that many residents and communities have concerns over fireworks being used to cause harm and distress. Used irresponsibly, fireworks can cause damage to property and do significant harm to people and animals. Not only is there a danger from fireworks exploding, they can also pose a serious fire risk as well.
This is why members of the public may only use fireworks on private property, such as their back gardens, and only licensed professionals can use them in public places. If children are setting off fireworks in your area, ask them politely to stop. It’s possible they’re unaware that they are breaking the law. If you know their parents, perhaps ask them to intervene.
If there is an ongoing problem with people setting off fireworks, in a threatening or dangerous way, then please report it to Dorset Police
Enjoying the opportunities Autumn brings for celebration are important to us all, so I hope you all have a fun (and safe) time over the next week or so.
