Not Just Sundaes

£1500

Not Just Sundaes is a community café staffed by volunteers and focused on bringing local people together.

  • PRIORITY 1

It is a place for the whole community to meet and relax, but also hosts a variety of groups and events throughout the week.

Not Just Sundaes applied to the PCC for a grant of £1500 from the Safer Dorset Fund. This money is to provide both a drop in centre and a self-esteem support service for secondary school students.

The self-esteem support group was piloted in 2014 when schools requested a service to support students and it proved very successful. This group is available to young people displaying a lack of self-esteem or self ‚Äďworth and gives them an environment in which they can form friendships and address difficult situations they may be facing. The 6 week course, written by a Youth Development Worker, is an interactive group session with a large range of activities and worksheets. By building self-esteem, the young people who attend are able to improve relationships at school and integrate more positively with¬†the community .

Using the PCC funding, they delivered two 6 week courses , one for a  group of 6 , the other for a group of 7 and have also continued to support some of the young people beyond the 6 week course including on a one-to-one basis. Feedback form the young people included :

  • It made me feel better
  • It was fun as well as it helped me
  • I was able to talk to someone
  • I was accepted
  • My confidence improved
  • I stopped self harming
  • I can now help myself

The drop-in sessions continue to take place in the Community Café  for those aged between 15 and 18, providing them with a safe place with exclusive access to the café facilities where they can socialise or do their school work. Activities such as pool, table top games and art equipment are offered. The drop in session is staffed by youth work assistants and led by the qualified youth development worker who is on hand to monitor the sessions and provide help and advice if necessary.

The cafe also piloted a series of music nights, but these were not as successful at this time, and ceased after the pilot project.
