The Horse Course - ReStart Course
The Horse Course applied to the Safer Dorset Fund for a grant to enable them to deliver 24 hours of one-to-one horsemanship-based behaviour interventions to young people at risk of reoffending.
- (YOS) PRIORITY 1
- PRIORITY 4
The ‘ReStart Course’ specifically targets participants referred by the Youth Offending Service (YOS) and Youth Inclusion Support Panel (YISP ) . Referrals were made based on young clients that were not successfully reacting to other interventions because theywere either unwilling or unable to engage in a classroom environment or with talk-based interventions.
The Horse Course actually exceeded their target by delivering a total of 53 hours of one-to-one time. During the sessions, the young people put into practice the skills that they had been taught, including engagement, assertiveness, communication and language, focus and perseverance, taking responsibility, empathy and realistic analysis and planning.
6 young people took part in the “ReStart” course. The Horse Course were successful with all 6 young people completing the course, someof whom achieved their Parelli Level 1 Horsemanship. All participants saw and improvemnt in social skills , with a notable reduction in their problem behaviours. All particpants reported an increase in their self-worth and hope.
Harriet Laurie from the Horse Course said: "PCC funding allowed us to deliver these outcomes for young people at risk of offending in Weymouth & Portland, we would welcome the opportunity to build on this work.”
