Westover Rowing Club

Westover and Bournemouth Rowing club operate from a scout hut on the river Stour, near Iford Playing fields, Bournemouth. The site is some distance from local amenities and is therefore without power, is secluded and dark at night., and as such has become a target for graffiti and drug use paraphernalia.

The site  is used by club members and associates early in the morning whilst still dark, which makes female and young users feel particularly unsafe.

The project fitted solar powered, motion sensor security lights as a deterrent against misuse of the site and to provide lighting for site users on arrival.

This project benefitted the members of Westover and Bournemouth Rowing club which includes students of the Avonborne Academy and the Bournemouth District Scout Association.

Local young people were spotted using the club pontoon during the summer holidays 2016, but since the installation of the equipment there has been no reoccurrence of vandalism, littering or graffiti to the site. The solar power lights have significantly added to the safety of the site and a survey of club members has confirmed an increased confidence especially during the darker mornings and evenings with the site now looking professional and in constant use.

The Westover and Bournemouth Rowing Club extended their thanks to the Safer Dorset Fund for helping them to obtain equipment to support safer rowing and facilities in the Bournemouth area.
