How to Stop Scams and Fraud - New Leaflet Now Available

News Release - Free Fraud Flyer

Partners from Dorset Police, national Cyber-crime specialists, Citizens Advice and Dorset and BCP Trading Standards have all worked with the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and Age UK to produce a flyer that gives simple, clear advice from trusted sources, on how to stay safe and get help should you become a victim of fraud.

Following a conversation with Age UK, the Dorset Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick asked a range of experts and partners to produce a free fraud flyer giving information and guidance to older people, on recognising frauds and scams.

The flyer is available at Citizens Advice offices across Dorset and is also being distributed through Victims Support and Trading Standards. A downloadable version is available at the bottom of this page and from the Citizens Advice Dorset website.

David Sidwick said; “This whole idea came about when I met with Age UK, when I was on the campaign trail. They had identified a need for easy-to-read leaflet for older people who are nervous about being victims of fraud. The aim was to explain the types of fraud, what to look out for, where to get help, and how to report it - this flyer does just that.”

Richard Bristow from Age UK said, “As criminals get more sophisticated and as technology gets more complicated, it can be easy to slip up.”

“Age UK welcomes this flyer, and we hope to get into the hands of as many people as possible.  By working better together, we can protect the older residents of Dorset from becoming victims of fraud and cyber-crime.”

Rovarn Wickremasinghe, Chief Officer, Citizens Advice Bridport & District said; “A large number of Dorset residents are victims of scams or fraud, with many feeling ashamed or too embarrassed to ask for help. Informing about how scammers operate and where to go for help is essential so that we can reduce the number of victims in Dorset.”

“It’s so important to learn how scammers operate and know what to do if you suspect a scam. We all need to work together to stop fraudsters in their tracks.”
